If we are going to have a cohesive world trade organization, and maintain civility, transparency, and fairness, then we are most likely going to have to be a little more careful in the future. We cannot and should not engage in trade wars, which lead to political impasse and hurt commerce, or even lead to unrelenting and lasting disputes, or war.

The <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/importers-by-country/united-state-importers/"title="USA Importer Directory" >United States felt it had no choice but to put tariffs on Steel and Tires coming from <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/importers-by-country/china-importers-by-country/"title="Chinese Importer Directory - China Import" >China, claiming China was dumping on US Markets, that is to say selling at below costs. The Chinese retaliated with tariffs on frozen chickens. Not long ago, I was discussing trade wars and how they escalate with a US-Russian post cold war scholar, Jesse Giraldo, who has an interesting perspective on such issues and so I asked him, “What are your thoughts on steel pipe dumping and that trade war fiasco brewing?”

Giraldo stated; as for China saturating our steel industry the issue seems to stem from basic market mechanics. If there is a demand for steel in a particular region, U.S or otherwise, suppliers move to fill that gap. If we don’t want foreign competition to undercut our domestic business profit margins then we can simply petition to tariff their imports.

Okay, this is a good point and yet the steel is inferior, the iron ore used is not as pure, nor are their processes comparable, it’s a problem, and although it is a lot cheaper, it’s a problem. But we do have too much power with our unions and old industries with a strangle-hold on politics, this jeopardizes free-markets and trade, especially with steel. This administration and the last, and the prior to that have all engaged in protectionism, like our trading partners, so I agree.

On the issues of tires, many were knock-off brands, inferior, and not up to par with US tire safety standards, amongst other issues such as the rock bottom prices being sold into the US Markets. Next, I asked Giraldo what he thought about the BRIC Nations; Brazil-Russia-<a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/importers-by-country/india/"title="Indian Import Companies - Import India" >India-China and their push to de-thrown the US Dollar as the World’s reserve currency. Jesse stated;

The real danger here though is not if it will happen, I think most analysts agree by now that this is the future we are going to have to deal with but how this will affect U.S prominence. China pushing for the Yuan as a global reserve currency is going to change things dramatically but I think the BRIC itself, the fact that these countries have identified a common interest and are working together is the bigger issue at hand in the long term.

To this, I’d have to say I concur, and thus, it is my hope that you too will wake up to what is going on out there, as these issues do indeed affect us all.

Documentary credit is an instrument that allows businesses to be engaged in successful trade export relations. These documents allow international trade to overcome the challenges given by the distance involve in such relations.

The most commonly used forms of documentary credit are the letters of credit. They allow <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/manufacturers-exporters/"title="Exporters and Manufacturers Directory" >exporters and importers to have an equally balanced business relation. Letters of credit in their variations allows for the provider of the service or seller of the merchandise to be paid based on the terms of the agreement upon delivery. The importer wins by receiving products of the quality and quantity that he or she was expecting.

The Letter of Credit credit is used around the world by many countries with the objective of reducing the conflicts of interest that may exist between sellers and buyers. For instance, the ideal transaction for the exporter is the one when it pays right after receiving the goods. Conversely, for the importer an ideal scenario is when he or she receives payment before shipping the merchandise.

Through the Letter of Credit a bank works as an intermediary between sellers and buyers to do business. After the seller has shipped the merchandise, the bank will make sure that the latter is what the buyer had requested (in both quality and quantity). Then bank will then make the reimbursement to the seller and later grant the importer the possession of the merchandise.

Thus, the buyer does not transmit any funds to the seller until it has received documentary credit to take possession of the goods and the seller receives payment once it has shipped, provided that the requirements have been met.

Therefore, documentary credit springs from the following needs posed by international trade:

One: the need for the exporter to have a written commitment of importer to pay for the merchandise. Using documentary credit, the seller will get paid by the bank if the buyer is unable to.

To assure the importer that the payment by the bank will only be made if the seller can show that it has properly performed its contractual obligations.

Image – It is important to take note of how the market views your services. Your image comprises the visibility of your business, your logo, the uniform of your employees, the signage on the road, your reputation on the market. Image is everything. I have seen small companies grown to large conglomerates all because they managed their image consistently and excellently. If there is anything that seeks to damage the image and outlook of the organization, there are people designated to repair and remove the impact of any such image dents. Your image speaks for you in your absence.

Impact - This refers to the positive effect your product, service or your company has made in the lives of others. The reason a company is to grow and make a positive impact on the lives of its stakeholders which includes the shareholders, customers and employers. Companies that spend on corporate social responsibility make so much impact even with the little they spend on the under privileged. After all, what is success if it does not touch one that has not access to success and also make them great.

Implementation - This is putting to action all that has been planned. In most situations, corporates emphasize planning and preparation and fail at the point of execution and actually doing the planned activities. Implementation is equally important. It requires a consistent follow through the suggested action plans. Most failure is not because there is no dream; it is at the point of putting all the dreams to action. When the rubber faces the road, when the pain comes in, when the unanticipated difficulties come, that is when quitting seems to be the only route to follow. However, those who decide to persevere and implement all that is carefully planned become successful. Start implementing what you plan and always finish implementing what you start.

Import – This is the movement of goods and services from one nation that has the resources into the nation that has need for the goods and services. In cases where it costs more to make the item within a country, most companies choose to bring in the items either as raw materials or finished products into their own countries. Every country has its own import regulations, duties, import levies and taxes for each category of goods. It is important to acquaint yourself with such laws as you may import substances or goods that are prohibited without your knowledge.

Incentive – this is an element that increases an employee to achieve more and increase in effort and delivery. Usually companies that provide production bonuses or other gratuities outside of salaries stand a better chance to retain employees and have consistency in production than places where no additional incentive is ever talked about or implemented. An incentive is not merely monetary but can be a gesture such as giving an employee time off, extra recognition of good performance etc. As leaders, you need to be creative about how to incentivize your employees. In countries where access to basic commodities is a problem, leaders choose to procure these items in others countries and make them available to employees thus adding the convenience employees need.

Income - This is money that is received on a consistent and regular basis either through salary payments or through interest accrued from investments made. In any situation, the endeavor is for the income to always outweigh the expenditure. Income should be budgeted. As a company you must be able to budget where all your income comes from or where the anticipated inflows are coming from. One way to guarantee regular income that is predictable is to go into sales and maintenance agreements which become a consistent form of income.

Incorporation - this is a process by which a company or organization is constituted as a as a legal corporation. In some countries, companies have Inc after their name which means Incorporated. A company is a legal entity which can be sued, it is a legal persona. It is therefore important to ensure that the organization sticks to the confines to the conditions of the incorporation or registration.

Independence – This is a state by which a company or business entity has capacity to stand on its own without the continual injection of capital by the shareholder. It is the dream and desire of every investor that at some point they get a return on what they have invested over time. When a company has enough funds to finance its orders, monthly expenditure and any such costs, it is independent and mature. There are varying durations that companies take to come to a place of freedom and independence. Some companies depend on the shareholder for many years. This can also refer to the state of a nation. When a nation is under colonial rule it is dependant. When the colonizer eventually leaves the nation then Independence is declared.

Industry - this is economic activity and structures that a focused on the processing of raw materials and manufacture of goods in factories and plants. The activities in the industries of any country determine the economic status of that nation. A nation will not be able to export or make goods for its own people if the conditions given to industry owners are not conducive for them to operate profitably. No economy can thrive based on goods and services imported from other nations. Only when a country or community begins to manufacture and sells its own goods do we see the standards of living improve. They can then trade their goods for cash which is in turn used to sustain the communities and families.

Information – This refers to your access or exposure to facts and knowledge (information). Sometimes this is learned through attending formal education or in other instances information is obtained through news sources like radio, newspapers etc. Your access to information determines how far you go in life. Information is what separates the informed and the ignorant. The ignorant will never realize that they lack information until someone who has the information shares it with them. A company or country must always endeavor to keep its people informed of what is going on in the country or company so that no one is caught by surprise. People fail to move in the same direction in situations where the direction is only known to a few individuals. Only when education, explanation and illustration are done will people buy-in.

Infrastructure - these are basic physical and organizational structures (such as roads, buildings, drainage, etc) necessary for the operation of a country or society or business enterprise. Companies invest in immovable assets because of the nature of their stability and consistency to maintain value. It is wisdom for any corporate or country to invest in infrastructure. That is legacy for generations to come. Descendants after your will still find the company warehouse standing and not need to build one from scratch. Invest in infrastructure as much as possible.

Innovation - This is also referred to as creativity which is the ability to create new ideas, products and services. There is no limit set as to which products a company can make. Sometimes innovative ideas are simply modifications or remodeling of existing ideas. Innovation helps organizations to stay on the cutting edge of development. We can both make a bicycle but because I am more innovative, I will add value and put other small gadgets on the bicycle I make, my innovation will make me stand heads and shoulders above my competition.

Intentionality – This is a deliberate and calculated move by leaders of a company to do something for the benefit of stake holders. The leaders have to have intentionality in dealing with employees. They have to be deliberate about salary increments, benefits, health care of the employee and general welfare. There are things a country needs to be intentional and deliberate about for the livelihoods of its people to be lifted. It must be something that is imposed upon the leaders but something the leaders are willing to do without any coercion or force being applied.

Interest - In business this can mean the money that you get charged for borrowing money. Usually it is a percentage per annum. It can also relate to the areas concern or areas of focus. One can say “I have business interests in that country”. The same person can say “the bank charged me interest on the loan I borrowed”. In the case of money charged on borrowings, my advice is that the company finance staff has to keep an eye on this figure as oversight can actually lead to bankruptcy. I have watched with great shock how a company seems to be doing well until the lender demands their money and repossessions of property start.

International - this is when a business or service exists across nations. There is a need for a business to uphold high standards whenever there are international transactions. Companies strive to get into international markets as they may outgrow their own market within the country of origin. International existence of a company is governed by the respective laws of the land on which the company is registered. With the existence of the internet, companies’ resources and services are available to a more global client base. Import and export is the main activity in international business.

Internet - this is also referred to as the World Wide Web (www). This is the connection of computers all over the world for the purpose of information and resource sharing. It becomes the electronic way of handling information, news etc. With the advent of this technology, we now have e-news, e-business, e-health, e-commerce, e-education etc the e- standing for electronic. Businesses have been revolutionized as they have become available to international markets through websites or web pages. This phenomenon has changed the way business is done between nations and communities. News is transmitted faster and cheaper to the intended audience in a more efficient manner. Solutions to common problems one faces are available on the internet. One just has to search for the information. With the right keywords you can get access to all the information resources you ever need.

Intranet - this is almost similar to internet above except the fact the reach is more restricted to internal customers. It enhances intra company communication. This becomes the company notice board.

Invention - this is linked to innovation above. It is when something is discovered for the first time e.g. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, Henry Ford invented the motor vehicle. There is no limit as to what can be invented. There are new things being invented every so often. Some are quite significant while others are not so significant and worth mentioning. Inventions make the life of mankind on this earth more pleasurable, smoother, more efficient and effective. There are also some inventions made which go against humanity’s existence e.g. some weaponry and poisons etc.

Inventory - this is a complete list of items such as goods in stock or the contents of a building. It is important to always take stock of what items the company owns or what items the company has in stock in order to enable leadership to make a decision on ordering more items to replace those lost, damaged or non functional. The inventory is then summed up in dollars on a balance sheet to reflect the residual value of equipment and also value of goods in stock which can be converted into cash through sales.

Investment - this is when someone put away money into something that has a promise to bring the same money back with return on it. No one puts away money expecting no return or growth on the initial investment. You always invest or put money into something that promises a good return in the future. No return promised, no investment otherwise is merely charity work. Some investment vehicles are more profitable than others. In some cases, the investment portfolios that promise a bigger return have a bigger risk factor. High risk, high turnover.

Invoice - this is a list of goods or services provided by a company or individual. The invoice has an invoice number unique in the organization where originating it, who is supposed to pay, a breakdown of the actual items that have been sold, quantities, unit price, taxes (if any) and all other charges such as handling, shipping etc. The full amount due is also reflected with payment options and conditions also spelt out. This is a legal document which can be used in the courts to demand payment. No invoices should ever be verbal as people tend to become a problem when time to pay comes.

When Jimmy Huber created Salehoo, his objective was for online businesses and internet marketers to have efficient access of legitimate and reliable wholesale suppliers that they can partner with. Since its conception, the site has now more than 50,000 loyal users and members.

The site makes use of the drop shipping business model. In this method, you, as the online reseller get to buy products from wholesale suppliers and sell them for some profit. This can include a long line of electronic gadgets, clothes, apparel and accessories. In marketing your chosen products, you may opt to put up your own online store or market your products to virtual market places like the infamous eBay.

In the process of buying and selling, you do not need to worry about inventories, stocks and spaces for your products. The suppliers will get to keep the products you want to sell, until such time that you have found a buyer and direct your supplier to where the product needs to be delivered. It would also be the supplier who will take care of the packaging and shipping of the product, making sure it reaches your customer. With this, so many have raised their eyebrows at the idea, while there are those who have joined the bandwagon.

Because there are risks involved, especially in dealing with suppliers, you need to make sure that your business partner is someone that you can really rely on, and will not scam you to your bankruptcy. This is probably where Salehoo comes into play.

First, Salehoo claims to provide you with a <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/"title="Free Importer Directory" >directory of verified and reliable suppliers. If you become a member, you get to access a list of more than 5,000 suppliers and wholesalers that are updated daily. Each supplier is pre-screened to make sure that only legitimate groups are found in the directory. You can double check and screen the suppliers for yourself if you want, just to be safe and sure though.

Second, if you are not satisfied with Salehoo’s service, there is a 60-day money back guarantee. That’s how confident the site it. You are risking little less with this guarantee.

Third, with a comprehensive list and supplier information, you can easily compare prices and find which ones give you the lowest cost of products. It is always a wise move to check the prices before you go and order.

Lastly, becoming a member would only require you a one time fee. For less than a hundred dollar investment, you get to be a lifetime member of Salehoo and access their wealth of information for as long as you live.

Get Instant and Unlimited Access to 5,347 Pre-Screened Legitimate Wholesale Suppliers of High Quality Products.

Get 50%-85% discounted prices from 100% prescreened wholesale suppliers.

Mail, crop, lumber and oil are just few of the things which are shipped all over the world. The transportation of these items can become a problem, especially when shipped in bulk. Freight and storage of goods have provided great advancements to the world market and economy. Fortunately, modern technology has helped make the export and import of goods to become an easier task.

In modern times, there are a lot of choices for the mode of delivery. It can be from port to port through ships, by aircraft, or by land through train, or by large vans or trucks.

Aviation is one form of delivering goods. There are certain aircrafts which are designed to accommodate large quantities of goods. Such air freights are of good use to the economic and military operations.

Another form of cargo is by sea. There are a lot of seaports with huge ships that carries tons and tons of freight. It may take a long time by sea but goods are properly sealed and placed in containers. Commodities are inspected and supervised properly.

Land transport may be through train or by vans and trucks. From the sea and air ports, goods are transferred and then transported by land. Trains are capable of accommodating large quantities of load at one time that’s why it is economic and energy wise. It is also efficient for long distance travels. On the other hand, trucks and vans are usually used for short distance travel or for a fast delivery which usually consumes a day or more. Fresh goods or supermarket stocks frequently use truck cargo for everyday delivery. Cargo like furniture and appliances are also included.

Containers used for cargo are properly sealed and intact. In any mode of transport, goods are handled efficiently. There are certain containers built for goods which require a certain kind of temperature and external environment. Strapping, blocking and bracing the goods are widely used today. Innovation and technological advancement has aided the security of the freight.

Safety of these cargoes is of great concern. Today, tracking numbers or schedules of shipment are provided. This is to properly inform the shipper involved of the whereabouts of the load. There are a lot of ways to find out about the status of the shipment whether it has reached its destination safely. One is through the internet. Online, the shipper can track down the location of the cargo by just visiting the sites of the carriers. Another way is by calling the customer service to obtain the needed information.

Transport of goods is vital for the world economy. It aids in the trade relations of countries all over the world.

Trade shows are kind of business exhibitions, with a focus on some particular industry. Various companies have their booths on display in these trade shows, marketing their business products and services. Visitors can visit the company’s booth or stall and collect first hand information about the business and products it offers. Trade show is a great prospect for importers and <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/manufacturers-exporters/"title="Exporters and Manufacturers Directory" >exporters looking to explore new markets.

Exposure:

Every business needs exposure.

Exporting directly to small overseas retailers is a comparatively new phenomenon, brought about by Internet. Selling directly to small US or European retail outlets even 10 years back was an uphill task because of many hurdles like lack of information on buyers, expensive communication media, scant information on overseas consumer interest, difficulty in accepting small payments etc. Trade Fairs and Buying Agents were two major avenues for small and medium <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/manufacturers-exporters/"title="Exporters and Manufacturers Directory" >exporters.

Internet, acting like a disruptive force, brought about major changes in traditional supply chain of

Exporter > Buying Agent > importer > Distributor > Stockiest > Retailer

Seamless, easy and inexpensive communication through continents brought exporter and retailer closer, removing many myths and wrong notions. The retailer suddenly discovered how much he/she stand to gain by importing directly because of huge price difference between merchandise of local stockiest and that of exporter’s. The exporter found the middlemen disappearing and was too glad to deal directly with buyer.

The phenomenon has been aptly described by many such as Sigurd Helland in Import Your Own Products And Make Your Profit Margin Miles Wider, Online Or Off and Robert Nelson in <a target="_new" rel="nofollow" href="http://ezinearticles.com/?importing-Made-Easy&id=5217″> importing Made Easy

Today, traditional supply chain is still in use for major chunk of exportable merchandise – but direct transaction between exporters and overseas retailers is growing very fast. Smart exporters have already organized themselves for serving overseas retailers – but Are you ready ? We discuss here what it takes to be successful in this new area of opportunity.

Retailer Buys in Small Quantity

If you plan to address small retailers – forget container load quantities. The business of retail is such that – large purchase can block money and even jeopardize business. The retailer may variously coin order quantity as ‘first order’ or ‘sample order’ – but it is very unlikely that he/she will ever order large quantity of one model/product. So, if your business model does not permit small order – retailer is not really your forte. Others may find Minimum Order Quantity a valuable clause in their product catalog.

Orders are More Frequent

Retailer will come back with repeat orders more often than a large importer as he/she can neither afford to maintain large inventory nor can keep rack space empty. Export orders will come as often as consumers demand, such as during Christmas season.

Margins are Higher

Silver line for exporters – you may compensate smaller quantity with higher price. Compared to the price charged by local stockiest – the retailer is unlikely to feel sizeable pinch and may not object to slightly higher price provided you communicate smoothly.

Be Sensitive to Issue of Trust

Importing from overseas country may bring excellent profit, but it is certainly more risky than buying from local distributor or stockiest. The issue of trust will always play on the mind of retailer, specially during first transaction, and he/she is likely to keep the first order as low as possible. The exporter should be sensitive to this concern and negotiate accordingly.

Prefer Air Freight

Most small retailers are not equipped to handle logistics operators and are uncomfortable with long delivery period in sea freight. Air freight, though more expensive, suits retailer’s requirements better. However, the retailer may not be aware with these issues, specially the first timers. As exporter, you should quote air freight as much as possible and educate the retailer if necessary.

How to Get Information on Retailers

There are many retailers’ associations in usa and Europe. You may contact them for their list of members. Easier option is to contact The Great <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/category/importers-by-country/india/"title="Indian Import Companies - Import India" >Indian Bazaar who has compiled a <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/"title="Free Importer Directory" >directory of over 2000 overseas retailers (small retail outlets, convenience stores, drop shippers, large retail chains etc).

Conclusion

Exporting to small overseas retailers does not require significant investment and shipment can easily be handled through couriers. As a result, small Indian exporters and those new to export field will find this opportunity very lucrative. Margin from single shipment may not be much – but a handful of active retailers can keep a small to medium exporter busy throughout the year.

The concept of “lifetime value” is an important one to consider as a health professional wanting to grow a health practice.

What do I mean by lifetime value? Well, when I started out in my own practice, as far as I was concerned if a new patient came into my clinic and paid me £50 for a consultation, then that patient was worth £50 to me. Following this through, if I placed an advert that cost me £250 I had to get 5 patients through the door for it to be worth my money. How wrong I was!

The lifetime value of a patient/ client will be the amount of money that the AVERAGE patient spends with you IN TOTAL, not simply for one session. This figure is the amount that I expect each patient to bring in to my practice over the course of several years. Rather than thinking, as I did when I started my own practice, that each new patient was “worth” £50 to my practice, the actual figure is much higher than I initially thought.

The easiest way to work out the lifetime value of your patients/ clients is to do a rough calculation. Try to work out how often a patient is likely to visit you over a period of several years. If you are just starting out in practice this is not an easy figure to calculate, but perhaps try to estimate a figure.

If you have a more established practice or clinic one of the best ways to do this is to take a random sample of your patients and work out the average amount of treatment sessions that they saw you for. To use myself as an example, I looked at a random selection of 50 patient notes and discovered that the average patient returned to me for 8 sessions. (However, different health professions will have different answers for this calculation – for instance, a physical trainer I know expects to see his average client for 50 sessions, as his work involves an ongoing fitness regime, meaning that many clients see him weekly for several years.)

Once we have these estimates it is very easy to arrive at the lifetime value figure. To use my example again, let’s say I charge £50 per session. As I would expect to see my average patient on 8 occasions, my lifetime value figure is £400.

What this means is that for every new patient that comes to see me, rather than earning the £50 I first suspected, in actual fact I am earning eight times that amount! That makes a huge difference to how I view my various practice building strategies.

Going back to my original example – if I was to spend £250 on an advert, even getting one new patient through my door was likely to make me a profit (although I wouldn’t consider that to be a job well done!).

Likewise, if I wanted to spend £1000 on a smart, professional website, it becomes a much better financial proposition if I just need to generate three new patients from it to make a profit. Having a prominent advert in the business section of the telephone <a href="http://www.importerbase.com/"title="Free Importer Directory" >directory may well be worth the money when viewed through the “lifetime value” lens.

Please don’t get too hung up on these calculations, as it is not important to have an exact figure. Rather, focus on the concept and see that you probably earn a great deal more from each new patient or client that comes through your door than you initially thought.
